The committee heads have not been updating the blog is because we are quite busy. Our English exam is just tmr, and our exams are just a few days away. Scene 5 – Lantern Shop

[An Qi came to an old Lantern Shop.]

An Qi: Po po! Po po!

[In one corner, the grandmother, Tao Jian Hong, limped towards her granddaughter. She was dressed neatly in comfortable sacks and a white blouse. Her sliver – grey hair was combed back into a bun.]

An Qi: Po po!
Jian Hong: My lovely granddaughter, how are you?
An Qi: I am fine… I am doing well in Canada.
Jian Hong: That is great…
An Qi: Po po, why are you limping?
Jian Hong: That day, when I went to the market, I slipped onto the floor. Fortunately, there was a kind young man who helped me up.
An Qi: Did you visit the therapist?
Jian Hong: Why waste such precious money? It is not necessary…
An Qi: No Po po! Come, I shall bring you to the therapist.
Jian Hong: I have applied some medicated oil already. You should bring me to take a look at your boyfriend.
An Qi: Who says that he is my boyfriend?
Jian Hong: You can’t hide anything from me, dear.
An Qi: I swear that he is really not my cup of tea! He is so ugly.
Jian Hong: Ha ha… Now, the youngsters get to choose their love. We are not so fortunate. We are forced to marry someone, no matter what. So, we can’t tell our elders that the person I am going to marry is not my cup of tea.
An Qi: They are so cruel! They did not spare a thought about the bride.
Jian Hong: No… This is our customs, my dear. However, nobody practice it nowadays. If I have a chance, I wish I am as young and as pretty as you.
An Qi: Oh Po po, I am sure you are far more prettier than me.
Jian Hong: Ha ha ha!
An Qi: Po po, my father says you used to tell him about your past… He said that you are…
Jian Hong: My dear child, you want to hear my story?
An Qi: Yes! Yes!
Jian Hong: Well, but first, introduce him to me…
An Qi: Po po!

Scene 4 – Old and small rented apartment

An Qi: [opened the unlocked door with a cracking sound] It’s time Grandma should do some renovation here.
Xiu Wen: Are you sure this is the correct unit?
An Qi: [spotted an old lady in the kitchen] Auntie Yang!

[The Old lady turned. She limped forward, and smiled-]

Auntie Yang: An Qi! You are back?
An Qi: How are you?
Auntie Yang: I am fine. Thank you.
Xiu Wen: Hello, auntie. I am Xiu Wen, your granddaughter’s friend.
Auntie Yang: How can I possibly have a granddaughter? I am not married… Please get my status correct.
Xiu Wen: An Qi…
An Qi: [ignores Xiu Wen] Auntie Yang, where’s Po Po? [Grandmother in Cantonese]
Aunite Yang: She is in the lantern shop. Quick, go there now… She will be delighted to see you…
An Qi: Ok… I shall leave now…
Xiu Wen: An Qi… [follows An Qi despite being ignored] An Qi… Which lantern shop?

Scene 1 – Year 2009 – Present – Malacca – Grassland Travel Bus

[An Qi, a University student from Canada came all the way to Malacca to visit her old and frail grandmother, with his admirer, Xiu Wen.]

An Qi: [waking Xiu Wen up from his sleep] We are here!
Xiu Wen: It’s time to get off the plane… [yawns]
An Qi: What plane? This is Malacca.

Scene 2 – Malacca Town

[An Qi and Xiu Wen made their way to her Grandmother’s small rented cozy apartment.]

Xiu Wen: An Qi, I wonder how your grandmother looks like. Is she as fierce as you?
An Qi: What do you think?
Xiu Wen: Wow, Malacca is so beautiful… I wish to stay here for the rest of my life.
An Qi: Then, I will leave you.
Xiu Wen: What did you just said?
An Qi: Oh forget it…

Scene 3 – Came to an old and small rented apartment

Xiu Wen: Your grandmother lives in such a small house?
An Qi: She owns a private museum of her own. This is the backdoor of the museum.
Xiu Wen: Why did you go by the back door?
An Qi: Search for the word ‘surprise’ in your dictionary!
